When JFK Jr. and Princess Diana Met at The Carlyle

Something that Love Story didn’t cover was John F. Kennedy Jr.’s pursuit of Princess Diana. What started as a personal letter from the American prince to the people’s princess turned into a private meeting at The Carlyle hotel in New York in December of 1995. Though the public—and the tabloids—would have loved to believe it was a romantic encounter, JFK Jr. was there strictly on business. He wanted Diana to pose for the cover of George magazine.
“He was quite in awe of her,” says Patrick Jephson, Princess Diana’s private secretary. “Not uncomfortable, but he certainly seemed to be on his best behavior,” and acutely aware that he was asking Diana for a favor. Diana, on the other hand, was unfazed. “She was very cool—and jolly, you know, and smiley and welcoming.”
