It’s been a little more than a week since Vanity Fair published Janine di Giovanni’s special report on the ongoing civil war in Sudan. She returned to our pages with a breaking news update Friday, shortly after the UN Human Rights Council held an urgent “red alert” session on the conflict-torn region.
The latest area at risk? The centuries old Sudanese city of El-Obeid, where over 500,000 civilians face danger or death. “This is not a drill. It is a red alert that needs to land on the desks of heads of state and government around the world,” UN Human Rights chief Volker Türk said. “Their phones should be running hot in the coming days.”
Türk is clear that powerful countries like ours, which today is marking 250 years of independence, could put a stop to this disaster. While fun, light-hearted celebrations are de rigueur on July 4, actual action to save hundreds of thousands of people would certainly be a notable—and historic—way to mark the occasion.
While we’re on the topic of celebrations, I would be remiss if I failed to note that—as expected—Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce officially celebrated their nuptials Friday, surrounded by about a thousand of their nearest and dearest. We have the guest list, of course.
