Like everyone else, I am surprised—and delighted—that a roughly 3,000-year-old epic poem is the hottest property of the summer. While we already know that certain folks threw troubling tantrums prior to the release of Christopher Nolan’s latest, The Odyssey, interest in the film, and the work on which it is based, remains remarkably high. Before you pick up Homer’s tome to keep your IMAX buzz going, here’s what you need to know.
The Trojan War isn’t the only battle we’re considering this weekend. VF’s features editor, Hillary Busis, is taking up sword and scabbard against therapy speak, while Hannah Seligson has the dish on how the world’s most exclusive private clubs are fighting the good fight against assholes. And in Silicon Valley, Margaux MacColl reports on a man who chose the other side in humanity’s war against AI, deciding to give into it completely.
Is all this conflict why stars like George Clooney, Richard Gere, and Pamela Anderson have fled Hollywood? I’m sure that’s part of it, but when you see how wild it is just to get groceries in LA, you can see their point. Sometimes, the ultimate privilege is the ability to extract yourself from the fray, and—like Odysseus—fight your way back to the quiet life.
