“September 11 gave me my career.” That’s the gripping first sentence in a new essay we’re running today by MS NOW journalist Ayman Mohyeldin, who was working as a desk assistant at NBC News in Washington when the planes hit the Twin Towers. In a flash, he writes, everything changed: “The region I came from, the language I spoke, and the culture I understood were suddenly at the center of the biggest story on the planet.” You’ll want to make some time today, on the tragedy’s 25th anniversary, to read Mohyeldin’s words—and think about the ways in which America has and hasn’t changed for the better since that horrible Tuesday morning.
