A few months ago, Erika Kirk told me that she’ll never lie again. Why? “I am so fixated and paranoid,” she said, “of having anything keeping me from going to heaven to be reunited with my husband.” Her husband, of course, was Charlie Kirk, the Turning Point USA founder who was murdered last September while speaking at a college in Utah. In the year since Charlie’s assassination, his widow has been thrust onto the national stage—taking over as CEO of Turning Point USA while becoming the target of a sprawling ecosystem of right-wing conspiracy theories. Yet for all the attention paid to her clothes, her makeup, her seeming love of fireworks, and that unflinching stare, Erika herself has remained something of an enigma. This summer, I spent significant time in her world—at home in Scottsdale, at Turning Point’s Phoenix headquarters, at conferences and MAGA balls in DC, and with the family Charlie left behind—all in the name of answering the question: Who is Erika Kirk?
