Listen, everybody: Do you want to watch a politician fall apart in real time? If so, please spend the next 15 minutes watching Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens crashing out on CNN last night after endorsing Republican senatorial candidate Mike Rogers—a man who has stood by while his surrogates and President Donald Trump have pushed Islamophobic rhetoric about his opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, who beat Stevens in the primary. Then return here for Ta-Nehisi Coates’s take on the wild situation in the Wolverine State: “Stevens, in joining Rogers, has allied herself with this odious culture war, one that is itself tied to a very real war,” writes Coates. “The campaign of hate, of which El-Sayed is the latest victim, has a simple goal: to render Muslims and Arabs more killable.” Tomorrow, we’ll see how successful that campaign has been. Elsewhere, Dan Adler grills Substack founder Hamish McKenzie, author of a new book called How to Save the Media—now you tell us!—while Julia Black brings us the close read on Anna Brockman, mysterious wife of prominent GOP donor and OpenAI cofounder Greg Brockman. More tomorrow! |
