Plus: Inside the Exclusive Toast to 'Love Story'

View in browser | Update preferences

Vanity Fair Daily logo

Over the course of his life, LeBron James has owned plenty of top-tier cars. Lamborghini. Ferrari. Rolls-Royce. Now, he's adding an extra special vehicle to his collection: a one-off Mercedes-Maybach S 680.

"Super personalized" is how James described the four-door sedan to Vanity Fair's Brett Berk. The car's custom features include a spacious rear passenger compartment (perfect for the six-foot-nine James to sit comfortably while being chauffeured around Los Angeles), and an etched plaque on the console between the front seats with Akron's latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates. Above that reminder of home? The letters LLTK, for "Long Live the King." Throughout the vehicle, you'll find his personal King James logo—a blocky mirror-linked capital L and J, for his initials, with a crown atop their extended feet.

But as unique as the car is, James and Maybach produced a second S 680 (nearly identical to James's ride), to be auctioned off later this year to benefit his LeBron James Family Foundation and the I Promise educational initiatives it runs for at-risk students in his hometown.

James's new Maybach was only the beginning of a great conversation with Berk. Read on for more about the athlete's work ethic, the "Game Gods," and if he ever thinks about life after the NBA.

The Newman Chronicles

BY JAMES WOLCOTT

Paul Newman saw his movie-stardom as a trap and worked to find his way around it—to keep fame from corroding his life. He succeeded beyond measure, as a distinguished actor, award-winning director, dedicated philanthropist, entrepreneur, political activist, racecar driver, and loving husband and father.

From the September 2009 issue, Patricia Bosworth replays critical moments—some witnessed firsthand, others from Newman's friends and colleagues—in a five-decade trajectory, gauging the unique impact of this remarkably private, deeply honorable man.
