In my hometown of San Francisco, all eyes turned across the Bay to Oakland this week, where the long-awaited AI showdown between tech titans Elon Musk and Sam Altman finally hit the courtroom. The billionaires have been engaged in a years-long war of words over the mission and future of OpenAI, an operation the pair launched together over a decade ago—and that Altman still runs.
As illustrated by the abundant links above, Vanity Fair has been tracking the evolution of OpenAI from the start. Musk's lawyer in the case, Marc Toberoff, is on the opposite end of that spectrum, telling VF that he wasn't terribly familiar with the billionaires at the heart of the dispute, as he's spent most of his life as a film producer. If the first week of testimony is any indication, however, Toberoff is bringing a little bit of Hollywood to NorCal, as the trial is shaping up to be as cinematic as the blockbusters Toberoff has helped bring to the big screen.
