Ears still ringing from yesterday’s fireworks, we turn today to what we left behind in declaring our independence. Well, maybe “left behind” isn’t quite accurate—like that ex whose name we still can’t help but Google, Americans remain somewhat obsessed with the British royal family, despite our centuries-old breakup. Sometimes that means a smidge of schadenfreude, as exemplified by the revelations Hadley Hall Meares brings us regarding the oft-crumbling estates on which the royals live. Sometimes we feel charmed admiration, as when we see the Princess of Wales thriving at Wimbledon. And sometimes we experience a bit of sympathy, as when we learn how security concerns have abruptly canceled a planned London reunion between King Charles III and his California-raised grandchildren.
Even the life of a fictional royal is a mixed bag, as the cast of House of the Dragon suggested when they tested each other’s friendship. Easier, it seems, to be common but comfortable, like Mr. Darcy or a teenaged Elle Woods, neither of whom have to worry about the rent—but both with a vibe as iconic, if not more, than the House of Windsor’s.
