Do fall film festivals still matter? That’s the question VF’s Rebecca Ford and John Ross are mulling this week, now that the lineups for the Venice and Toronto fests have been revealed. Following the tone set in May at Cannes, TIFF (September 10–20) and Venice (September 2-12) are short on major studio debuts, a situation that makes awards season predictions a little bit trickier. We’re so lucky to have Rebecca and John’s Little Gold Men podcast to help us figure those races out.
While speculation on 2028’s Oscars battle might be premature, Vanity Fair style correspondent José Criales-Unzueta already has his eye on best actor winner Michael B. Jordan’s remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, set for release in March of 2027. This is the fourth version of the heist yarn, and if there’s one thing all the iterations have in common, it’s tremendous style. Can the Jordan-directed version, in which he also stars, hit the incredibly chic bar set by its trio of predecessors? José has some thoughts on how it might.
While we wait for more awards hopefuls to make their debuts, what about those Oscars contenders (and even winners) from years past that you never got around to watching? I’ve been feeling vaguely guilty about my failure to screen The Irishman for years, but I always forget that intention when Netflix makes its opening “tudum.” Thank goodness for Chris Feil, who pulled together a list of 25 incredible movies available on the streamer right now. My suggested pairing: Feil-recommended Fincher classic Gone Girl and the latest season of reality show The Ultimatum. It’s the Netflix version of caviar piled atop a Pringle, but twice as salty.
