Like many people of my generation, I grew up with Damien Hirst. The 61-year-old artist came to prominence right around the time Gen Xers were putting away childish things, and his work has remained a fixture ever since. As I watch so many of my cohort begin to fixate on the past, it’s thrilling to see how vital and forward-thinking he remains—and how his lifelong candor has somehow managed to skip over midlife crankiness to land at full-on, later-in-life IDGAF. All that’s on display in José Criales-Unzueta’s exclusive interview with Hirst, on the occasion of the artist’s collab with 123-year-old Scottish cashmere luxury label Barrie. Snuggle up and give it a look. You might need one of Hirst’s plush-looking blankets as you prepare to watch You Can See Everything, the already-infamous documentary about Elizabeth Holmes from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. Hillary Busis was at the New York Film Festival’s single screening for the movie, which was so in-demand that people camped out for 12 hours in hopes of a seat. Good for them, I guess, though I feel I can wait to “see everything” from my couch. Great, now I’m the stick-in-the-mud Gen Xer. |
