Few criminal cases in recent history are as upsetting as the death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez, who was only 14 years old when she was killed last year. Singer David Anthony Burke, better known as D4vd, has been charged with her murder—and Joy Press was in the Los Angeles courtroom yesterday where the case’s first preliminary hearing unfolded, sitting right behind Hernandez’s shattered parents. Her account of the prosecution’s evidence is a tough read, particularly if you (like me) happen to be a parent yourself. It’s one thing to consume true-crime content mediated by documentary crews or reenactments; it’s quite another to see the facts of an alleged crime presented plainly, in all their haunting detail.
