Before you could casually photo-dump from the comfort of your own phone, you had to have the foresight to charge your camera battery before a night out, lug said camera around, set off the flash in dark, intimate spaces at just the right moment, and then go home and upload the photos to your computer.

For years that’s exactly what VF special correspondent Derek C. Blasberg did. From 2009 to 2012 he turned his documentation of glamorous people doing glamorous things—think supermodels and socialites at Fashion Week, art fairs, and film festivals—into a column for Interview magazine called Fast + Louche.

“I was the in-house archivist: at the end of a night out or after a trip around the world, I’d have all the evidence. What power!” writes Blasberg. “I’d dole out images to friends like a drug dealer, teasing them, bargaining for things I wanted. Memories, with leverage.”
